A Brief History of Pride Month

The history of Pride Month is closely linked to the Stonewall Riots. The riots in 1969 were a series of violent demonstrations by the LGBTQ+ community against a police raid that took place in New York City’s Greenwich Village neighborhood.

The month was first observed in 1970, and it was originally known as Gay Pride Month. In 1990, it became Lesbian and Gay Pride Month and then LGBT Pride Month in 1995.
