How to Forgive Yourself for Past Mistakes

Have you had trouble forgiving yourself for past mistakes? Everyone has things in their past that they’re not proud of, but sometimes it’s difficult to forgive yourself. Maybe you did something terrible to a friend or family member. Maybe you feel guilty about committing a crime. Maybe you made a bad decision and someone got hurt because of it. No matter what you did and what you’re holding onto, it’s important to take the steps to forgive yourself so that you can move on with your life. Guilt can wreak havoc on your life if you let it hang around without addressing it and moving on. Below you’ll learn some steps you can take to help you forgive yourself for past mistakes so that you can have a better quality of life.

6 Steps to Forgive Yourself and Move On from Past Mistakes

  1. Reflect on what is bothering you. What did you do? What was your role in what happened? What about the situation bothers you the most? You may want to write this out, but it’s perfectly fine to just think about it.
  2. Imagine a different outcome. If you could go back in time, what would you do different? What would you say differently? How would you correct your mistake? Try to picture it in your mind, concentrate on the details, and fix your mistake.
  3. Accept that you can’t go back in the past. The exercise above is the closest you can get to going back in the past. To move on, you will need to accept that no matter how much you would like to, you can’t change the past. That doesn’t mean you’re powerless, it’s just a truth that you will have to accept before you move on.
  4. Try to make amends if there is a way. This doesn’t mean confess your mistake, especially if it will hurt someone, it just means trying to right their wrong if you can. If you wronged a friend, reach out and apologize. If you can make things better for the person you wronged, do something nice for them. This won’t apply to every situation, but if you can do something, do it. If you need help making a decision about this, seek advice from friends, family, or a therapist. Some things are better left alone, and you will have to make a decision on that. You may also choose to do random acts of kindness or community service if your situation prevents making amends directly. If you are religious, praying and asking forgiveness may be something you want to do.
  5. Start over. Create a new starting point for yourself. You’ve made some mistakes, like everyone else has, and now it’s time to move on. Commit to being a better person. You may want to do something special to make the occasion like start a new journal or buy yourself a special piece of jewelry to remember your new commitment to yourself.
  6. Remind yourself of your commitment. During low points, you may be tempted to dwell in the past. Remind yourself of your commitment to starting over, and then try to move past it.

Forgiving others is often easier than forgiving yourself. People normally hold themselves to a higher standard than they do others, so the guilt and pain can last for longer when a serious mistake is made. Guilt eats away at happiness and it makes it difficult to enjoy life, so learning to forgive yourself is a must if you want to have a wonderful life. If you take the steps above, you’ll be closer to forgiving yourself and moving on.

5 Tips to Help You Love Yourself More

To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.”

Thich Nhat Hanh

This quote is so true. In this day of shaming – body or otherwise -on social media, it is no wonder people have a hard time accepting themselves for who they are – themselves. Self-love has so many emotional, physical and mental health benefits to it, that it should not be ignored. And you have to love yourself before you can effectively love others. Below are 5 actions you can take to self-love.

Move more

Sitting stagnates our body. And if that sitting happens to be in front of the T.V, it can also lead to mindless snacking on unhealthy foods. Due to a lack of movement (exercise) and an overload of calories, weight gain is usually the result, which can further erode self-esteem and degrade the perception you have of yourself.

If you have a job that requires sitting, prevent the effects of it by getting up and moving for at least 5 minutes out of each hour. More is even better.

Practice good nutrition

Have you heard the saying “You are what you eat.” And it turns out, it is true. That being the case, you have the choice to eat junk food, which is high in salt, sugar and saturated fat or to eat clean. Clean will not only provide your body with the nutrients it needs, but will also help you stay fuller longer, thus reducing the urge to eat unhealthy snacks between meals. Focus eating fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, lean meats, whole grains, nuts and seeds to get the nutrition your body wants and needs.

Improve your sleep quality

Being sleep deprived (for whatever reason) takes its toll on the body because that is the time the body uses to rebuild, repair and replenish itself. If you don’t give it adequate time to do these things, you start the next day at a reduced level of productivity.

If stress is keeping you from getting a good night sleep, take action to reduce it. If the cause is environmental, then make changes to your mattress, bedding, room temperature, amount of light coming in, or whatever it is that is keeping you from getting at least 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep.

Make time for you

Sometimes we get so busy taking care of others, that we forget to take care of ourselves. Engage in activities that are relaxing to you. Many people like to do yoga followed by a relaxing warm bath sprinkled with a few drops of their favorite essential oil, like lavender. Add in some soft music and a glass of wine and you have a recipe for relaxation.

Forgive yourself

This one is holding many of us back. There is something that we have done in our past that we are still holding against ourselves whether it was our fault or not. The only way to get past it is to forgive yourself and put it behind you. Otherwise the negative feelings will haunt you forever and hold you back.

The past can never be changed, so it is fruitless to dwell on it. Learn from those mistakes so that you don’t do it again in the future, but then don’t let them hold you back from living a quality life. Forget about it and move on!

Use these 5 tips to increase your self-acceptance and to love yourself more. Be beautiful both on the inside and outside!
