9 Types of Internet Marketing

The internet has opened up new doors in the world of marketing. Here’s a look at just a few of the more popular forms.

  1. Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

SEM is a kind of internet marketing that promotes a web site by increasing its visibility in search engines. It does so through SEO (see below) and through paid advertising, content marketing, and social media marketing.

  1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO focuses on improving the rankings or visibility of a web site within search engines with the use of keywords and high-quality content. Backlinks also factor in, helping the web page crawl up in the listings in Google, Bing, and other search engines.

  1. Display Advertising

Display advertising involves advertising an ad in a static, set space. The ad will usually be composed of an image, artwork, or words like those found in magazines and newspapers. Example: Sidebar banner on a web page.

  1. Pay Per Click Advertising

This is a kind of advertising where the publisher of the ad pays per click received. This means, while 1000 people may see the ad, the publisher will only be charged when a person actually clicks on it.

  1. Social Media Marketing

Social media marketing includes marketing on social media websites like Facebook. Marketing may include creating pages, directly promoting a website/company, and paying for advertising on the platform.

  1. E-Mail Marketing

This is a form of marketing that focuses on distributing an advertising message via email. This might include a text message or a combination of words and images. It might also provide access to a video.

  1. Referral Marketing

A more subtle form of internet marketing, referral marketing allows you to refer your friends, family, and other people to a website via a special link when you are pleased with their product/service. Companies who offer referral programs will give an incentive for each referral you bring in.

  1. Affiliate Marketing

If you are an affiliate, you will be working as a third party to promote a company’s products or services. You’ll refer customers to that company by marketing their products and services, and you’ll get an incentive for each sale or lead you promote.

  1. Video Marketing

Video marketing is about marketing a product or service with the use of videos. They can be any length and have any sort of content or message within them. They might be educational in form, but ultimately have the goal of promoting a product or service.

5 Mistakes People Make When Trying to Lose Weight

Weight loss is one of those things that so many people try and fail at. It’s frustrating, but it doesn’t need to be. Here are some of the most common mistakes that people make when they’re trying to lose some weight.

  1. They only focus on the scale

Rather than looking at all the different aspects which come into play when you start losing weight and shedding fat, many people are concerned with one thing only: the number on the scale. While this is a great indication that you’re becoming lighter and losing weight, it’s definitely not the only way to measure success. Take measurements of different parts of your body, such as your waist, thighs, hips and arms. Look for changes in clothing size and in the way you feel too.

  1. They eat too little

Yes, it’s possible to not lose weight because you’re not eating enough. People think that if they starve themselves and don’t allow themselves to eat proper meals, they’ll lose weight quickly. This happens most commonly when people are trying to lose weight quickly for a special occasion or event. However, starving yourself will cause your body to cling on to the fat that it has already, since it believes it won’t be getting food for a long time and goes into ‘starvation mode’.

  1. They’re too stressed

You can become very stressed when trying to lose weight, and whether the stress is coming from your desperation to lose more weight or other factors in your life, it’s never a good thing. When you’re stressed, your body produces stress hormones, which in turn, cause you to gain weight or hold on to any excess weight you already have.

  1. They’re not sleeping well

Getting good sleep can have a massive effect on how easily your body is able to lose weight. People who sleep badly will released high levels of a hormone named cortisol, which is one of the leading hormones which make it difficult for the body to lose weight.

  1. They overestimate how many calories are being burned

You might feel like you’ve done a massive workout and you deserve a huge meal afterwards, but one of the main problems that people have is massively overestimating the amount of calories they have burned. In order to get a more accurate result, buy a monitor that you can wear on your wrist or ankle – this tracks the calories you burn based on your individual fitness levels, weight and height, as well as your heart rate.

Halloween M&M Cookies

amy bakes in the 'burgh

Finding Halloween cookies that ship well can be a challenge. Many adorable treats involve icing, frosting, or other decorations that aren’t quite suitable for a trip across the country. Sure, I’d love to bake adorable sandwich cookies with eyes and fangs that look like The Monster Book of Monsters from Harry Potter, or witch hat cookies made with Hershey’s kisses, or even just cute cut-outs frosted to look like ghosts and tombstones, with but such treats don’t hold up in shipping.

Fortunately I found these easy-to-bake, easy-to-ship Halloween M&M cookies at Cooking with Karli. I amended her recipe just a bit by adding two tablespoons of vanilla extract, rather than just one. I also meant to keep some M&Ms out to press into the tops of these cookies but totally forgot, so they definitely look more cookie-from-the-black-lagoon with the M&M lumps in them than I’d intended…but that actually works…

Lemon Almond Biscotti — amy bakes in the ‘burgh

Lemon and almond make a great pair, not unlike my California-based best friend Amanda and me. Yes, I also have a Pittsburgh-based best friend, Kate; and yes, I get that you’re not supposed to have more than one best friend because best is a superlative but I’ve always marched to my own drummer so there […]
