Diana Ross will be given a Lifetime Achievement honor at the 45th annual American Music Awards, and also perform during the broadcast, which airs Nov. 19 on ABC from Los Angeles’ Microsoft  Theater. Ross has history with the AMAs, having attended her first ceremony in 1974 and serving as host in 1986 and 1987. She has seven AMA wins under her belt and has performed many times on the show, which is produced by Dick Clark Productions.

“I have endless memories of all the years that I have appeared on the American Music Awards,” Ross said in a Wednesday release about honor. “It started with Dick Clark and The Caravan of Stars and American Bandstand. It was Dick Clark who said, ‘Music is the soundtrack of our lives.’ So true. I am so excited to be receiving this honorable award.”

Juvenile Great Blue Heron

Herons will hide, and blend in, on the banks of marshes. Reeds and brush make it very easy to never even notice them.

This one assumed he was invisible and stayed motionless while we photographed him from multiple angles.

Based on the size and lack of the longer head feathers I’m thinking one of this years young from the near by rookery.

Italian Sausage Bolognese

What's for Dinner Moms?

This was NOT one of the healthy dishes I made for my mother but rather the first dish when I got home from North Carolina the other night. My family had taken out bulk Italian sausage (a 1/2 sweet and 1/2 hot mixture) so I needed an easy way to cook it.

The difference between Bolognese sauce and regular marinara is that marinara tends to be a quick cooking every day sauce while Bolognese is a more complex sauce built around meat,  dairy, and stock. Bolognese is not laborious to cook but it does take 2-3 hours to cook down. I did mine in a large pot on the stove but you could easily put the mix in your slow cooker to cook down 3-4 hours on high or 6-8 hours on low.

Verdict:

Every time my daughter walked through the downstairs  she kept saying how wonderful the house smelled. It…

14 English Words & Phrases that Mean Something TOTALLY Different in Jamaican Patois

Alexis Chateau

Jamaica is one of the most famous countries in the world. Hands down.

We’ve had several athletes hold the titles of fastest men and women in the world. We brought you reggae and rap. Introduced you to jerked chicken and Red Stripe beer. Popularized dreadlocks. Became a haven for hippies from all around the world. And have some of the best beaches Mother Nature has to offer.

One of the things that stand out most in Jamaican culture is our accent, and by extension, our dialect. While not everyone has a stereotypical Jamaican accent (most Americans assume I’m from California), and we don’t all speak the dialect, those who do often land themselves in trouble with other Anglophones.

The trouble comes from the fact that many English words have a totally different meaning in Jamaican Patois. While all Jamaicans learn and speak Standard English in school, many have a…

Long silent, the grandfather clock awakes
to strike a full twelve bells at midnight
On a glass topped table, five candles light
without the need for human hands, chairs
with flawless satin seats await the guests.
Dr. Mengele passes through the door
with a box of spectral chocolates,
the same he gave to Jewish twins
when their train arrived in Auschwitz,
prized subjects for his surgeries.
Ilse Koch, Red Witch of Buchenwald,
appears in fashion, with a fancy purse
of Jewish prisoners’ tattooed skins.
Himmler brings his book on the Occult
and racist jokes to share, but is ignored.
Adolph and Eva are fashionably late,
she with her two terriers, he with
his German Shepherd, Blondi,
all wagging tails and licking hands,
just like things used to be,
before the last few days,
when Blondi took the cyanide
to…
